How do I get started?
We offer a few ways to search. To begin, try entering some keywords and using the Search button in the form. You will be presented with a list of dates and headlines, along with the first few lines of each article. Select the article that you are looking for and click on the link to view the full text. How much does it cost?

Searching the archives is free as are the most current 14 days of stories. If it's within 14 days, simply click on the headline link to view the full-text of the story. After the 14-day period, however, you must pay to view the full text of the articles.

Pricing for articles will range from $1.99 per single document to as low as $1.40 per document, depending on the archive package you purchase.

To allow for flexibility, in addition to single-article purchasing, we offer passes for a week, month or year. You will be asked for your credit card information as part of the set-up process.

Other options for purchasing articles are:

1 article: $1.99, Good for the 24-hour period after purchase.
3-article pack: $5.49, Good for one week from purchase.
10-article pack: $17.99, Good for one month from purchase.
25-article pack: $39.99, Good for one month from purchase.
40-article pack: $55.99, Good for one month from purchase.

Corporate Pricing:
500-article pack: $599.99, Good for one year from purchase.

I can't find what I am looking for.
The Patriot-News archives contains most, but not all, of the local articles published in The Patriot-News and The Sunday Patriot-News since August 1986.

The archives are a self-service system. To learn how to better use it, search Search Help or at www.newslibrary.com.

Currently, The Patriot-News library staff and The Patriot-News staff do not provide a service to help locate articles. If you need to find an article that you believe was published but is not in the database, try the reference department at one of the area public libraries. These libraries carry microfilm of The Patriot-News. Microfilm is also available for loan from The State Library of Pennsylvania. This can be achieved by requesting an interlibrary loan from your local public library, anywhere in the country.

Please note that the archives do not include syndicated columnists or wire services articles.

If you are having trouble finding just the right search terms to use, or if you are trying to narrow your search to find just the right set of articles, try using our advanced search features.

I had to download an article twice; will I be charged?
You will only be charged once for an article even if you happen to view it more than once, provided the viewings occur within a 24-hour period. If the viewings are more than 24 hours apart, you will be charged again.

Username and Password Not Working.
Make sure that you are using the username that you chose when you registered for your account. You should have chosen your own password when you registered and verified it by typing it twice. Don't confuse your password with the password hint that you entered; this is not used for viewing articles. When entering your password, make sure your "Caps Lock" key is not on. Usernames and passwords are case-sensitive. Also, make sure you distinguish between the number zero and the letter O.

If you are still refused access and have checked the above, please send e-mail to patriot-news@newslibrary.com. Include your full name, username, browser type, browser version and a brief description of the problem. Your account information is kept confidential, and re-registering will not affect your credit.

How do I get a hard copy or reprints?
Using Netscape browsers, you can use the "Print" or "Print Frame" option on the "File" menu to print a hard copy of the newspaper article that you have purchased. You also have the option to save the article as a file on your desktop using the "Save" or "Save As" option on the "File" menu. This will save the document as an HTML file that can be opened in your browser and printed later.

If you are using Microsoft's Internet Explorer, you can print by right-clicking in the frame containing the article and choosing "Print." You can also use cut and paste to transfer the document into another application such as Word or Notepad.

All articles purchased from The Patriot-News archives are for personal use, and all copyright laws apply. If you want to republish an article in print or electronically, you must get permission from The Patriot-News managing editor.

Reprints, or copies of newspaper pages, are not available through our archives. Customer Service at the Patriot-News, (717)255-4223, sells the newspaper for 30 days after publication, if available. The Patriot-News also sells reprints of published pages from 2004 onward. For more information, call (717)255-8288.

My search returned no articles.
Your search might return zero articles for several reasons. Remember that, generally, this archive includes only articles, editorials, letters and obituaries that were produced locally.

If your search terms are too broad and would require the service to find too many related articles, you will be told that your search is too general. You will need to add more terms to your search and be sure to search for all of the terms or connect them with "and."

Searching for any of your terms or using "or" to connect your terms in the advanced search will increase, not decrease, the number of articles found.

If you are using advanced syntax, you might receive a syntax error if your search is constructed incorrectly. Refer to the Search Help page and try your search again.

Error messages.
SEARCH SESSION EXPIRED The "search session expired" message is actually a technical problem usually caused by an overload of history and temporary internet files stored within your browser. You should clear both of those items from your browser and then exit the browser and try again.

In Internet Explorer, go to Tools and click on Internet Options. Click General tab, then click on Clear Temporary Internet Files and Clear History. Shut down your browser and then restart.

To clear history in Netscape, click on the + beside Advance and then click on Cache, Clear Memory Cache And Clear Disk Cache.

If this step does not result in giving you access, either your user search session has expired due to an extended period of inactivity or your browser is not set to accept cookies.

Start a new search session if you have not clicked any buttons for a while.
If your browser is not accepting cookies, change that setting by opening the screen for your browser's properties or preferences, find the section for the Cookie Settings (look under advanced) and select the Accept Cookies option and click Apply. The server uses those cookies to keep track of which search results you want to see.

The article I paid for was not longer than the search results preview.
Some newspaper articles are longer than others, and some are even just short news items called briefs. You probably have seen these in the printed newspaper in the business or international sections.

When choosing the articles you would like to purchase, make note of the word count listed with the article on the Search Results Page. Since the results page will typically show you no more that the first 100 or so words of the article, the number of words in the entire article will be a good indication as to how much more information you will receive. A typical newspaper story length is around 500 words.

Another hint is to look for the words "shorts," "roundup," "standalone," "update" or "brief" in the listing of the article on the Results page. This usually indicates a list of short news items.

Can I get a refund?
